When It Comes To Holiday Gifts for College Students, Does Your Insurance Policy Sound a lot Like: "Bah Humbug?"

You search and search for that perfect gift. Maybe you stood outside waiting as they unlocked your local mart store in the wee door-busting hours of the morning to stake your claim on the last shipment of Wii game systems in your area; or maybe you have watched your son or daughter look longingly at their friend's new iPod or laptop. But if you are like the majority of Americans in a recent study you may not fully understand how typical property insurance policies handle damage or theft of your child's most prized possession.

The national survey conducted by Trusted Choice® and the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big "I") indicated that 96 million households have inaccurate expectations when it comes to protecting computers, electronics, cameras, and other popular holiday gifts, while nearly half that number (42 million) expect to give or receive high tech gadgets this month.

"With so many people giving and receiving electronics this holiday season, it is important for consumers to understand how to protect these gifts," says Big "I" President & CEO Robert A. Rusbuldt.

So what are the misconceptions?

Deductibles
Many consumers simply don't realize that although student property like athletic equipment, digital cameras, MP3 players and phones would generally be covered under a family's homeowner's policy, the cost of the item would not meet a standard homeowner's deductible.

Exceptions
Another issue is that homeowner's policies usually exclude certain causes of damage and certain kinds of property. Want to protect your digitally downloaded software or recover your losses from a power surge or flood? Chances are your basic homeowners' or renters' policy is not the answer. But families do have another affordable and reliable option to protect student property.

Never FearSM
"Some experts caution that using your policy to protect your child can be dangerous to your insurance record.
They also note that the deductibles on homeowner’s policies is often relatively high, say $1000, and that many student losses will fall below it."
